In April 2002 the first wedding ceremony in 200 years took place at Spencer House in the exotic surroundings of the Palm Room.
Granted a licence for civic marriages in March 2002 by Westminster City Council, Spencer House once more played host to a wedding within its eighteenth-century palace walls.
Mr. Joseph Friedman, distinguished art historian and author of the definitive book on Spencer House, married Miss Hattie Woods of London.
There have been just three previous weddings in the House in those 200 years or so. Harriet, the sister of Georgiana Spencer, later the Duchess of Devonshire, married Viscount Duncannon, heir to the 2nd Earl of Bessborough, here. Some thirty years later the two daughters of Lord Lucan, brother of the then Countess Spencer, were married in 1815 and 1821 respectively. The Archbishop of York was celebrant at both these weddings.
